Lesson 6 – Link building 101

This is the sixth lesson of the Gotch SEO Starter Course.

In today’s lesson, I’m going to show you all you need to know about link building.

Let’s jump right in.

Value Quality Over Quantity

Acquiring quality links should be your number one priority. How is a “quality” link defined? A qualify link will have the following characteristics:

  • It is on a site relevant to yours
  • It is on a real website with real traffic
  • It is on a site that has authority

That’s it. It isn’t that complicated. Get backlinks from real websites in your niche and you will see results.

Don’t Undervalue Quantity

You’re likely thinking: “Wait. You just said value quality over quantity!”

Getting quality links is your #1 priority.

Your #2 priority is to get as many of these quality links as possible!

The more quality domains you have linking to your site, the stronger your authority will be.

Avoid Pre-2012 Anchor Text

Understanding the importance of acquiring quality backlinks is the first step.

The second step is to understand how to use anchor text.

The formula is simple:

  • Use branded anchors for the majority of your links.
  • Use keyword-rich anchors for a small percentage of your links.

Here are some percentages that will keep you safe and get you results:

  • Branded anchor text: 70%
  • Naked link anchors: 20%
  • Generic anchors: 5%
  • LSI, partial match anchors: 1-5%
  • Exact match anchor text: less than 1%

Knowing percentages are great, but you must also understand WHERE to place your most important anchors.

Play With Fire and Get Burned

At some point you will likely consider using grey or black hat link building strategies.

It’s inevitable and every new SEO goes through this phase.

I’ll be the first to tell you that many of the popular grey and black hat strategies like PBNs and web 2.0s can work well.

But that doesn’t mean you should use them.

Creating and promoting content assets is the most scalable, safest, and evergreen SEO strategy.

Most SEOs forgo this strategy because it requires more work and the results may take longer.

Those are valid reasons.

It comes down to your willingness to take risk.

I like to avoid risk in my company as much as possible, so we avoid most grey hat tactics.

My business is in this for the long haul, so it’s not worth it for me to engage in tactics that could get my site penalized.

You have to make that decision for your business!
