Let’s face it:
SEO can be complicated, overwhelming, and even frustrating at times.
There are hundreds of different rankings factors. Thousands of different strategies. And, an algorithm that changes daily or even hourly.
All these things can make you feel overwhelmed and make you lose sight of the most simple tactics.
That’s why I’m going to show you 3 simple strategies that you can use to increase your rankings ASAP.
Keyword: SIMPLE or KISS.
1. Leverage Link Equity
At this exact moment, you have free link power sitting on your website. Often times, we get so wrapped up in link building that we forget that our site has power that you can leverage. The key is to leverage pages that have authority to boost pages that are lacking it.
The best strategy is to use internal links with keyword rich anchor text.
As you know, I prefer the silo structure when trying to distribute authority through a site. To identify pages that you can leverage, go to Ahrefs and click on “Top Pages”. It will show you what pages have the most link and social activity on your site.
Building internal links on pages that already have power is super simple. But I also have two other techniques you can use to increase the authority of your site.
404 Link Reclamation
You may or may not already know about this strategy, but it’s really powerful (and very easy). Simply find 404 pages on your site, put them through any link analysis tool, and redirect the pages that have links to a different page on your site.
The first place I look is in the “Broken Backlinks” section in Ahrefs. Their data isn’t comprehensive, but it’s a good place to start.
Next, you should go into Google Webmaster Tools and click on “Crawl”. Under the “Crawl” section, click on “Crawl Errors”. Click on the “Not Found” tab to see all the 404 errors Google’s spiders have found on your site.
Now you should download the 404 pages and run a batch analysis through Ahrefs or Majestic. For Ahrefs, go to “Labs” and “Batch Analysis”. For Majestic SEO, go to “Tools”, “Link Map Tools”, and “Bulk Backlinks”.
Once you’ve identified pages that have links/authority or Trust Flow, you’ll need to decide where you’ll want to 301 redirect them. The default option is always the homepage, but if there’s a relevant page then that should be your choice.
The last tip in this section is to stop letting dead outbound links rob your website of authority! There are probably links in your articles or even in the comment section that are dead. When it comes to dead links in your articles, you can either replace them or just remove them altogether to regain some authority. I know most links in the comment section are “NoFollow”, but I’m super OCD, so I naturally remove the links if they’re dead. I don’t think there’s ever a situation when removing dead links is a bad thing.
The easiest way to find dead outbound links is to use Ahrefs. Go to “Outgoing Links” and click on “Broken Links”.
2. Get Serious About Indexing
Getting your links indexed isn’t some type of Blackhat tactic. It should be a priority for anyone who is building links. For example, when you build branded properties or business citations, these properties tend to have low indexation out of the gates.
Each property needs a push to be indexed.
The problem I see most often is people spending all of their time building citations and branded accounts, but they spend very little time trying to get them indexed.
Keep in mind, these properties are useless until they are indexed because Google doesn’t know they exist.
For every campaign we work on, we always have a column for “Indexation” and we check the status of each link on a regular basis. I explain how to do all of this in this post: “How to Get Backlinks Indexed 100% of the Time”
Getting links indexed has proven to be a challenge as of late, so I do recommend building tier two links. Not only will tier two links get your links indexed, but they will actually build the authority of your properties. As you increase Page Authority (PA) on these properties, you’ll subsequently increase the authority of your site over time.
Bringing me to my next point…
3. STOP Building Links to Your Site!
That’s right. I said it. STOP building links to your site. Sounds counter intuitive right? Before you rage, let me clarify.
I said stop building links TO your site.
The point is that many people are obsessed with acquiring more links to their site, but they never consider building the authority of links they already have! It’s way easier to increase the authority of a link you already have then to go out and acquire a new one.
With that being said, tier two links and social signals are the two best strategies. You can either do this naturally or artificially. Either way works, but one is obviously safer than the other. If you’ve built a strong foundation of tier one links then I highly recommend you keep your tier two links and social signals clean as well. There’s no point of doing all that hard work and then ruining it with a layer of spam.
Getting social signals to your tier one links can be a challenge, but it’s highly possible if you produce quality content.
At my agency, we typically build a strong layer of tier one links and then spend a great deal of time increasing the authority of those links instead of building new ones. Just like how you track indexation of your links, you should also run your links through a bulk PA checker on a routinely basis.
That’s it for this post! Remember, keep things simple. Don’t over-think SEO and keep taking action. There is no better way to see results then just simply taking action every single day and getting better/smarter.
So, I want to know, are you already using these 3 simple “hacks” for increasing your rankings?
